What is the Learning Bus?
Climb aboard our blue and red Metro bus – in a previous life a standard passenger vehicle – but now a state of the art mobile classroom. The aim is to bring computer training to workers who wouldn’t normally get to use a PC or laptop during the course of their working day.
One question we're often asked is why teach bus drivers how to use computers? One of the main beliefs of Trade Union Education is to encourage learning throughout our lives. Life Long Learning not only enhances self-esteem, but it gives us skills above and beyond what is expected in our everyday working roles. Bus drivers, cleaners, mechanics and canteen staff can all benefit from the basic IT skills offered on the Learning Bus, and access to courses is as simple as contacting your Union Learning Rep.
The Learning Bus has been a classroom since June 2002 and since then, over 700 Metroline workers have gained Accreditation in basic and intermediate IT skills. For some, this has meant more learning opportunities, as well as enhancing job opportunities inside and outside the sector. The Learning Bus is also used for celebrations like the Respect Festival and other community events and celebrations.
The Bus is equipped with ten laptops and two PCs, a laser and colour printers, heating, air conditioning, carpets, comfortable seating and a bank of library resources. Step aboard to find out more!
